Summary
Comparative electron-microscopic investigations of the fine structure of Ehrlich and SaI- ascites tumors led to the following conclusions:
-
1.
Both types of cells show a wide range of variation in the appearance of their nuclei and cytoplasm; they both have the structure of embryonal cells.
-
2.
The detectable differences in the structure between the Ehrlich and the SaI- ascites tumor cells are only slight and are primarily limited to the form and size of the nuclei and the mitochondria. The endoplasmatic reticulum in the cells of the SaI- ascites tumor is better developed than in those of the Ehrlich ascites tumor. Spindle-shaped bodies are demonstrable in the cytoplasm of the cells of the SaI- ascites tumor, as in the Yoshida sarcoma. These bodies are lacking in the cells of the Ehrlich ascites tumor.
-
3.
Both types of tumor contain cytoplasmic particles which, from their cytomorphological qualities, could represent viruses.
-
4.
Reliable characteristics of malignancy and evidence indicating the morphogenesis of the tumors were not revealed by the electron-microscopic studies.
