Summary
-
(1).
PCNB was found to lower the incidence of common scab if applied shortly before planting and earthing up, after preparing the seed-bed. Under conditions prevailing in the Netherlands and when using susceptible varieties the optimal rate of application may range between 60 and 100 kg of active substance per ha. A residual effect was found to last into the second year but not into the third. The chemical has a tendency to retard early development of the crop. This may, however, be made up for by its control ofRhizoctomia solani.
-
(2).
Mercuric chloride applied at the rate of 16 kg ha dissolved in water gave good control of common scab. If applied as a powder, the result is disappointing.
-
(3).
Acidification of the soil by application of sulphur reduces scab incidence. Sulphur was not found to have a fungicidal action against the scab organism in the soil.
-
(4).
Cultivation of potatoes for three consecutive years resulted in increased incidence of scab, even in soil acidified by the application of sulphur.
Zusammenfassung
-
(1)
