Abstract

Swallowing problems are increasingly recognized in the elderly population, in whom the maintenance of proper nutrition can be a significant problem. We describe here the general factors that affect the function of the pharynx, and the esophagus proper. These include a variety of local mechanical factors, disorders affecting the reflex swallowing mechanism, and the strength and sequence of pharyngeal contractions. Normal aging changes in both the pharynx and esophagus sometimes progress imperceptibly into true pathologic conditions. A better understanding of these non-specific and pathologic changes may be very helpful in planning appropriate therapy.

Specific disease processes considered include cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, achalasia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
