Summary
This report describes clinical signs of atrophic rhinitis in a group of European wild boars in the district Demmin (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). The disease was observed in young wild boars (< 1 year old) and was characterised by the following symptoms: sneezing, coughing, dyspnoea, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, bloody nasal discharge and deformations of the facial bones. One young female wild boar with an age of about eleven months was euthanised for further pathological and microbiological investigations. This animal showed a “progressive atrophic rhinitis” associated with toxigenicPasteurella multocida (S-forms ofPasteurella multocida ssp. multocida, capsular serotype D). Beside this, the animal was severely infested with metastrongylus sp. (eggs, larvae and adults). The causes and the pathogenesis of the disease are discussed.
