Summary

We have studied the effect of meprobamate on gastic secretion, giving 7 patients 600 mg. of the drug by mouth in a single dose and measuring in the following 2 hours, volume, free acidity, and total acidity of the gastric juice withdrawn by aspiration. Results obtained from the same patients after administration of a substance whose excitosecretory effect is nil, showed no difference.

In another group of 13 patients, the fractional method of gastric analysis (Katsch-Kalk) was used and repeated 2 days after every patient had been given a daily dose of 1.2 gm. of meprobamate by mouth. In this series, as in the other, no noteworthy modification in the acidity curves was observed.
