Summary

The transpiration of a rice plant, variety IRAT 13, grown in a controlled environment, was investigated by means of a continuous record of the difference between the rate of water vapour in the air admitted in the growth cabinet and that in the air issued from it. The plant was submitted to water stress by stopping the irrigation to the soil in which the plant was grown.

The plant reacted rapidly to the stress settlement, though the soil water potential was still high: on the one hand, the mean diurnal and nocturnal transpiration values, which increased linearly with time, became to decrease linearly. On the other hand, the transpiration cycles, over 24 h periods, became distorted, likely in relation with the rate of the nocturnal rehydration of the plant.
