Summary
Pure sensory information from the oral cavity is transformed into perception through iterativity and integration. Perception and muscle reaction are closely related in every functional behaviour. Every dysfunction of the jaw, lips and cheeks musculature should therefore be considered as a consequence of faulty coordination between the sensory message and the motor response. The aim of this present paper is to summarize different research undertaken in the department of orthodontics of Louvain with regard to 1 perception in infants and young children, 2 of environmental influences on the childs behaviour effect in general and its oral functions in particular, 3 motor activity in infants with special consideration of the swallowing act. Approximately 60 infants and 2000 children aged between 6 and 9 years, were examined. Numerous qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Besides the morphological recording, different functional tests concerning oral sensation, motor activity and stereognosis were performed. The results underlined the close relationship that exists between functional disorders, city environment, bad habits and nutritional state. All these observations help us to conclude that oral behaviour has to be learned in childhood and that the childs adaptive ability should not be overestimated.
