Abstract
We have obtained bronchograms in two living dogs by spontaneous breathing of powdered tantalum (particle size 2–5 µ) and could demonstrate that tantalum dust was deposited in healthy and diseased lung regions.
Microscopical sections showed that tantalum particles were deposited interstitially, within alveoli but mainly in the peribronchiolar tissue of airpassages. Greater amounts of tantalum dust were retained in areas where pathological changes in the anatomy had taken place.
Tantalum was not only deposited in the lungs but also in the mediastinal lymphnodes. Retained tantalum did not cause unfavourable tissue reaction.
A primarily alveolar deposit of tantalum can only be eliminated by using monodisperse dust of particles with a diameter greater than 10 µ.
Roentgenograms do not reveal small amounts of tantalum deposit.
Although tantalum is an excellent contrast material for inhalation-bronchography and for future diagnostic, caution should be taken when depositing inhaled tantalum dust in lung tissue.
