Summary

Discussion of the causes of portal hypertension is presented. Of prime importance is the resistance to flow in the case of the cirrhotic liver; seldom, it is caused volumetrically by arterioportal fistulas. The most serious complication is esophageal bleeding varices. Conservative and operative therapy are discussed. The surgical technique for portacaval anastomosis with the pressure-adapted arterialization according to Matzander represents the central theme of the films. Furthermore, the peritoneovenous shunt according to LeVeen in the treatment of ascites is shown.
