Summary
The secretion of calcium, potassium, sodium and protein in the pancreatic juice has been studied in 4 dogs with a permanent Thomas-cannula as well in the conscious state as under pentobarbital anesthesia. The flow of juice was kept constant by infusion of secretin (1 unit/kg · h). The concentration of calcium was found to be 0.6–0.8 meq/l under secretin, even at maximal flow rates and with very low concentration of protein. The injection of pancreozymin stimulated a highly correlated increase of the concentration of calcium and protein in the juice. The experiments led to the assumption of two independently regulated calcium fractions in the pancreatic juice: I. with no correlation to the concentration of protein and not influenced by pancreozymin. II. dependent on the stimulation by pancreozymin and going parallel with the secretion of protein in the juice.
