Summary

The activities of three disaccharidases (lactase, saccharase, maltase) and alkaline phosphatase in jejunal biopsies were determined in a group of 24 adult subjects from Northern Thailand and one of 9 Europeans. The mean activities of saccharase, maltase and alkaline phosphatase were similar in both groups. In contrast, a highly significant difference was found between the very low activity of lactase in all Thai subjects and lactase activity in Europeans. There was no difference of the mean activity of the four enzymes studied between Thai subjects with normal (n=8) and slightly altered (n=7) histological picture of the intestinal mucosa.
