A relativistic theory of X-ray absorption by spin-polarized targets

Abstract

We show that, as a consequence of relativistic quantum mechanics, photons with left handed and right handed circular polarizations are absorbed differently by spin-polarized targets. We illustrate this effect by explicit calculation of the K-absorption edge in ferromagnetic Fe.
