Summary
This report describes a patient with previously unrecognized liver disease who developed ascites followed by spontaneous bacterial peritonitis within a period of 24 hr. The fulminant onset of peritonitis led us to perform an emergency laparotomy suspecting a ruptured abdominal abscess. This case is evidence that spontaneous peritonitis can develop almost concomitantly with clinically apparent ascites in patients with rapidly progressive hepatic failure.
