Summary

Based on the tanning hypothesis ofGard a new mathematical formula has been developed for the description of the inactivation of polioviruses by formalin. It has been assumed that the basic reaction is one of the first order, but that this reaction is complicated by a change in sensitivity of the virus particles. This change of sensitivity is expressed in a differential equation, which is introduced in the formula of the basic reaction of the first order. The validity and usefulness of the resulting formula is demonstrated and discussed with the aid of numerous examples.
