Abstract
Nonlinear dual core couplers acting as switches and amplifiers can theoretically operate at arbitrarily low input power provided the device is sufficiently long. Two radically different strategies exist: one with touching cores and a device length many periods long and the other with cores well separated and a device length one or two periods long. We find that the many-period scheme is several times longer than the few-period scheme for switches and orders of magnitude longer for large amplification.
