Summary

Heterotopic pancreatic tissues are encountered with relative frequency in necropsy and surgical material from the upper abdominal organs. This is in contrast with the rarity of this anomaly in the liver, where only 1 such case has been reported.

Although heterotopic pancreatic tissues are for the most part asymptomatic and often incidental findings, in a considerable number of cases these anomalies are the source of serious clinical manifestations.

Generally, obstruction of a conduit or pathologic changes in these aberrations are the occasions when the clinical manifestations develop.

We are reporting the second case of pancreatic heterotopia in the liver, in this instance presenting itself as a palpable abdominal mass.

The reported rarity of this anomaly in the liver and histogenetic theories of the pancreatic heterotopia in general are also discussed. We believe that inadequate examination of the liver at necropsy has contributed to the very low reported incidence of this heterotopia.
