Summary
The effect of two non-ionic surfactants, Tween 20 and ATPlus 258 was assayed on the growth ofAcetobacterium wieringae on fructose. Both surfactants proved to inhibit the growth ofA. wieringae, already at 100 mg per litre. At 1000 mg per litre, the growth ofA. wieringae was inhibited by 41% by Tween 20 and completely by ATPlus 258. The production of the fermentation end-metabolite, acetic acid, followed the same inhibition pattern.
