The functional examination of the macular and perimacular region with the aid of Flicker-Fusion thresholds

Summary

This paper deals with the use of flicker-fusion thresholds, as plotted by De Lange for the detection and quantification of small or large visual field losses. Thanks to a mathematical treatment of the data obtained, under different conditions of stimulation, in normal subjects, two thresholds alone may express in central fixation the gravity and extension in the macular and perimacular region of an ophthalmological lesion. The knowledge of mean thresholds and limits in normal subjects, fixating the stimulus eccentrically, allows a quantitative evaluation of very small losses in the central visual field.
