A qualitative method of estimating the interaction between diffusion and electrodynamic drift underF2 layer conditions

Summary

It is suggested that electrodynamic drifts at right angles to the magnetic field lines in theF2 layer may be replaced by equivalent drifts along the field lines. The suggestion is used in conjunction with a straight field line model of the ionosphere to obtain a qualitative description of the form of an inospheric equilibrium layer formed in absence of production and loss. The layer produced has a latitudinal maximum ofN m , near dip angles of 30°, similar to that of the Appleton anomaly. It is concluded that good agreement would be obtained if electrodynamic drifts were included in attempts to compare theory and experiment above theF2 peak.
