Conclusions
-
1.
Copper xanthate cellulose fiber can be used as a filtering material for purifying and sterilizing air. It does not require previous sterilization.
-
2.
In the packing of the fiber into the filter, either one layer of bactericidal fabric or one layer of medicinal gauze impregnated with formalin must be placed on the lower grid of the filter and above the fiber. In the first case, before the filter is connected with the fermenter air must be passed through it for 2–3 h, and in the second case air must be passed until the smell of formalin has disappeared.
-
3.
The air must be passed from the bottom upwards at a linear rate of flow not exceeding 0.5 m/sec.
-
4.
The packing density of the filtering material must be between 0.2 and 0.3 g/cm3:
-
5.
When it is necessary to have a layer of fiber in the filter more than 0.05 m thick, it is desirable to arrange it in layers, using for this purpose metal grids or glass-fiber interlayers. It is better to use metal grids. The density of the packing of each layer should be the same and not more than 0.3 g/cm3.
