Abstract
Global biodiversity in lichens is discussed with respect to: areas of biodiversity, lichen biomass, food chains, nutrient cycling, carbon sinks, biomonitoring, climate change, conservation, and lichen identification. Examples of each topic are given, and areas for productive future research outlined.
