Summary
The potassium content of bovine facial arteries falls after incubation in physiological salt solution or in plasma from about 200 to about 140 mequ/kg dw. The sodium content increases from about 240 to about 270 mequ/kg dw. Cooling of the arteries to room temperature for several minutes induces a further decrease in the potassium content to about 80 mequ/kg dw and an increase in the sodium content to about 340 mequ/kg dw. Storage in defibrinated, oxygenated blood (4°C) decreases the potassium content of the arteries after one day to about 60, after two days to about 40 and after three days to about 30 mequ/kg dw. The calcium content does not change significantly. When the arteries are equilibrated in warm (38°C) salt solution or in plasma after the storage at 4°C, a slow increase in potassium content and a slow decrease in sodium content occurs. This process is accelerated by a higher potassium concentration in the bathing solution. The values of fresh vessels were never reached.—During the increase in temperature after cold storage the tone of the arteries changes without related changes in the K-content. The dilatation in response to a slight increase in the outer potassium concentration is not influenced by the variations in the potassium content of the arteries.
