Summary

Establishment and securing of a clear airway is of high importance in intensive therapy of patients in otorhinolaryngology. For this purpose long-term intubation has in the latest years proved in comparison with tracheotomy, especially since more suited tubes are now available. Both methods, however, are not competitive. Their indications depend upon the particular needs of each patient and the availabilities of personnel and equipment.
