Summary
This paper deals with the role of mixed venous pO2 in cardiac and respiratory control.
Hypoxemia which was confined to the right heart and to the pulmonary artery has been produced by injection of sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) in the V. cava just before the right heart. The dithionite injection (5 ml/min) increased the oxygen uptake by 60%. 8 unanesthesized goats were studied in 22 experiments. Oxygen uptake, blood pressure, ventilation, cardiac output and blood gas composition have been determined before and during the sodium dithionite injection.
The cardiac output was increased by 50%, the ventilation by 70% during the sodium dithionite injection.
The change of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration and pressure in the arterial blood were so small, that the activity of the arterial chemoreceptors most likely remained unchanged during the procedure. It has been, therefore, concluded, that the oxygen tension in the mixed venous blood is a controlling factor of cardiac output and ventilation.

Nach Fertigstellung des Manuskriptes erhielten wir Kenntnis von der Arbeit „Pulmonary receptors“ von H. N. Duke, J. H. Green, P. F. Heffron und W. J. Stubbens [Quart. J. exp. Physiol.
