Summary
The storage cells of the adrenal medulla of golden hamsters were investigated light and electron microscopically 24 hours, one, two and three weeks after parenteral application of Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). The results are as follows:
-
1.
In all stages storage of CMC can be demonstrated with the light and electron microscope.
-
2.
CMC ist stored in the vesicles of the endoplasmatic reticulum.
-
3.
With increasing amount of the stored material the storage cells show signs of degeneration which finally lead to their necrosis.
-
4.
The attempt to demonstrate CMC histochemically in the electron microscope with colloidal heavy metals gave a negative result because only extracellular acidic components can be demonstrated with this method.
