Abstract
A complex pattern of chromosomal variability is described for the pocket mouse, Perognathus baileyi. Two levels of reorganization exist: interpopulation variation involving fixed differences due to pericentric inversions and intrapopulation variation involving the accumulation of up to 10 supernumerary chromosomes. The mechanisms of evolution, geographic distribution, and population distribution of these systems are discussed.
