Summary
The clinical appearance of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) seen in the first half of the century is different than today. This study reviews the clinical characteristics of DFSP in 73 patients over a period of 25 years treated at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA. The patient delay has become significantly shorter and treatment if done adequately (wide margins both laterally and in depth) is generally curative. There is no relation between time of treatment or size of tumor and recurrence risk; radiation is of little value. Growth rate is commonly slow at first with marked increased rate later on. Metastasis was not documented but biological instability of the tumor can result in morphologic transformation. A follow-up period longer than 5 years is recommended.
