Management Factors which Influence Cadmium Concentrations in Crops

A Review

Cadmium in Soils and Plants

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 85))

Abstract

Cadmium has no beneficial effects in plants, but is considered a contaminant of food and feed. Cadmium can be retained in the body for many years, leading to a risk of chronic toxicity with excessive intake (Jackson and Alloway, 1992). Minimising Cd content of crops is desirable, as dietary ingestion is a major form of Cd entry into the body. However, efforts to minimise Cd concentration in foodstuffs must also take into consideration the requirement for a food supply for an ever-expanding world population. Therefore, it is necessary to develop management practices which can produce acceptable levels of Cd in food, both in the short and long term, while maintaining stable and affordable crop production.
