Abstract
The requirement for boron is not a general feature in cyanobacteria. Anabaena PCC 7119, a dinitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, cultured in presence of combined nitrogen was not affected by boron deficiency, However, when this microorganism was grown under dinitrogen-fixing conditions lacking in boron, a distinct inhibition of growth and a decrease in photosynthetic pigments and protein contents were observed. Nitrogenase activity of boron deficient cultures was reduced about 40% that of the controls within the first 2h of culture (1).
