Abstract
The K. pneumoniae nif gene cluster is regulated on at least two different levels, in response to fluctuating levels of ammonia in the cell. The first level is part of the general nitrogen regulation (ntr) system, by which enteric bacteria regulate a number of nitrogen assimilation genes such as glnA (glutamine synthetase), nif, and the hut, put and aut genes (Magasanik, 1982). The ntr system includes the glnF(ntrA), glnL(ntrB) and glnG(ntrC) genes. As in E. coli, the K. pneumoniae glnF(ntrA)+glnG(ntrC) gene products act as co-activators of ntr controlled genes, while the glnL(ntrB)+ glnG(ntrC) gene products act as negative co-regulators (Leonardo, Goldberg 1980; de Bruijn, Ausubel 1981; Espin et al. 1981,1982; Ow, Ausubel 1983; Merrick 1983).
