Although isolated non-lexicalized noun-noun Compounds (NN-compounds) are ambiguous, they get an unambiguous interpretation in discourse. The ambiguity results from the applicability of a variety of relations that base on semantic and background knowledge. In a discourse the Compound gets a specific utterance meaning by means of text and background knowledge. Based on a two-level semantics, where context-invariant semantic representations are mapped into concept families, an approach is developed where information given by the discourse interacts with compounding rules in order to determine the utterance meaning.
