Abstract
This paper describes the development of a software system at the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin, in order to organize and communicate clinical patient data. Our main topic is the design of an object oriented and distributed data model which integrates the different kinds of multimedia data into a uniform environment, and thus supports the clinical staff in complex medical applications. Our design supplies an open systems architecture and incorporates the advantages of the object oriented software paradigm. In structuring our object world, we have to develop the classical concepts towards greater abstractness, because we need more general concepts of classification and inheritance. We introduce a mathematical definition of some of our ideas.
