Abstract

Recognition of the inverse correlation between high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and the development of premature cardiovascular disease have focused a great deal of interest on HDL (Miller and Miller 1975; Rhoads et al. 1976; Castelli et al. 1977). HDL has been proposed to function in the process of “reverse cholesterol transport” by facilitating the removal of cholesterol from peripheral cells and transporting it back to the liver where it may be removed from the body (Glomset 1968). In order to gain insight into factors which modulate the plasma levels of HDL, we have systematically analyzed the metabolism of apoA-I and apoA-II, the two major apolipoproteins in HDL. This report will summarize our current studies on apoA-I and apoA-II metabolism.
