The Pharmacology of Pain

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 130))

Abstract

It is only a little over a decade since interest arose in the development of pain processing in the mammalian nervous system, and there is now widespread recognition that more basic knowledge is required in this field. Clinical management of paediatric pain has been largely empirical, and there is considerable ignorance about the ability of the infant nervous system to react to painful stimuli and the sensitivity of the developing nervous system to analgesic therapy.
