Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of cervical stretching on neck pain and pain free mouth opening. 12 subjects with neck pain were recruited from Eulji University. They participated in stretching program that consisted of passive stretching of target muscles. The target muscles were the upper trapezius, SCM, Scalenes, Lavator scapulae, suboccipitalis. The stretching for each muscle was accoplished in pain free range and applied 3 thines per week for 4 weeks. In order to determine the effect of stretching, pressure pain threshold, NDI, and active pain-free mouth opening were measured at pre and post intervention. NDI score was decreased and PPTs were significantly difference in bilateral thapezius, Levetor, Scapula, suboccipitalis and left scaleneus except right scaleneus and bilateral SCM. Active pain-free mouth opening was increased after cervical stretching. Patients with chronic neck pain treated stretching exercise directed at the cervical spine might be beneficial in decreasing neck pain and increasing pain-free mouth opening. We can consider the stretching exercise chronic neck patients as well as TMJ patients as self-management instruction within pain-free range.
