Eine Betrachtung nationalstaatlicher Kommunikationsbemühungen der letzten zehn Jahre lässt eine rasante Steigerung des Standortwettbewerbs erkennen. Sei es um Tourismus, Handel, Investitionen, qualifizierte Arbeitskräfte oder politischen Einfluss — die Länder konkurrieren immer entschiedener (und marketingtechnisch betrachtet professioneller) auf internationalem Parkett. Damit geht in den meisten Fällen eine Hinterfragung und gegebenenfalls Neuausrichtung traditioneller Selbst- und Fremdbilder einher. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat sich Country-Branding als eine Tätigkeit entwickelt, die herkömmliche Marketingstrategien mit identitätsstiftenden sozialen Diskursformen zu vereinen scheint. Kennzeichnend für das Country-Branding ist demzufolge eine multidimensionale, anspruchsgruppenorientierte Kommunikation, welche nationale, internationale sowie transnationale Target-Kreise mit einschließt.
Z.B. eigene soziale Kollektive (national), ausländische Investoren (international), länderübergreifende Interessengruppen (transnational).
