Introduction

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) are increasingly recognized for their potential economic and social integration worldwide. Estimates suggest 14% of the OECD population has a disability (Honig 2021). This figure is expected to grow along with aging populations, highlighting the important nature of this challenge. It also presents an opportunity, considering the social, health, and economic benefits that accrue to individuals actively engaged in economic activity. Historically, society’s view of the disability rights has changed radically in the past 30 years, from a marginalized population under threat of institutionalization and forced sterilization, to a growing disability rights movement that continues to advocate for de-institutionalization and for guaranteed equal employment opportunities (Youtube 2021).
