Abstract

Keratoprosthesis design, surgery, and clinical management have undergone tremendous advancement over the past century [1]. Its modern-day use represents an important treatment for corneal blindness in conditions not amenable to traditional penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) [2]. While actual keratoprosthesis placement is traditionally done by a cornea specialist, the vitreoretinal specialist plays an important role in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management of keratoprosthesis patients [3, 4]. Although many types of keratoprostheses, or KPros, are in modern-day use worldwide, including the osteo-odonto-keratprosthesis (OOKP) [5], this chapter will focus on the Boston keratoprosthesis [6], one of the most widely used KPros in the world.
