Abstract
Biological data on Stigmaeidae are largely biased towards foliage, bud and flower inhabiting species. These comprise approximately 190 of a total of 534 known species and, so far, have proven to be generalist predators and frequently co-occur with the more efficiente Phytoseiidae. Because of the difficulties involved in studying several organisms in complex foliage systems, research on the use of Stigmaeidae on biological control of phytophagous acari and of a few insects has focused on relatively specific associations. The role of generalist predators as suppressive agents has received less attention. However, there is renewed interest in the background level of suppression provided by assemblages of mainly generalist predators.
