Abstract
Several recent serosurveys have indicated that the prevalence of HSV-2 infection is continuing to increase (Table 1)1–5. The prevalence of HSV-2 is high in many populations. In Seattle, 43% of women and 35% of men attending STD clinics have already acquired HSV-2 infection, while in British STD clinic attendees, the figures are 37% and 27%. Breinig et al reported that 21% of women attending family planning clinics were HSV-2 seropositive3. Perhaps the most definitive work in this area is a recent population based serosurvey of the US adults which has shown that the overall seroprevalence of HSV-2 has risen from 16.4% in 1978 to 21.7% in 1990; a 32% increase in HSV-2 seropositivity in the last decade6.
