Abstract

Serotonin (5HT) is one of the main monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain. Its biochemistry and pharmacology (Bloom et al., 1972; Costa et al., 1974; Weight and Salmoiraghi, 1968; Bennett and Snyder, 1976; Nelson et al., 1978), brain distribution (Azmitia, 1978; Azmitia and Segal, 1978; Conrad et al., 1974; Bobillier et al., 1976; Moore and Halaris, 1975; Segal and Landis, 1974) and functions (Akil and Liebeskind, 1975; Jacobs et al., 1974; Jouvet, 1969; Lorens and Yunger, 1974) have been the subject of numerous investigations in the past decade. Compared with the wealth of information gathered in these disciplines, relatively little was known until recently about the postsynaptic action of 5HT and the mechanisms by which it exerts its overt behavioral effects.
