Abstract

During the past decade interest has focused on the existence of a local secretory immune system in the female genital tract. Early studies indicated that IgA, though normally found in small amounts in serum, is the predominant immunoglobulin in genitourinary secretions (1,2). These observations were based on IgA to IgG ratios in genital tract secretions which varied from 3:1 to 1:1 as compared to serum ratios of 1:5 (2–4). IgA in secretions of the genital tract is now known to have a sedimentation coefficient of 11S while serum IgA is 7S (5).
