Autoxidation of Amyloid Precursor Protein and Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 448))

Abstract

The major component of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) amyloid, amyloid Aß protein is derived from the transmembrane amyloid precursor protein APR The pathogenic mechanism leading to AD is not well understood. However, the central role of APP has emerged from the identification of genes that cosegregate with the disease. All of the identified susceptibilty genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease appear to influence Aß amyloid formation (Beyreuther et al., 1996; Selkoe, 1996).
