Abstract
The term Virtual Reality (VR) was popularized in the late 1980s by Jaron Lanier, one of the pioneers of the field. At the same time, also the term Artificial Reality (Krueger, M., Artificial Reality 2. Addison-Wesley Professional, Reading (1991)) came up. 1982 the term cyberspace was coined in a novel by W. Gibson (“Burning Chrome”). The Encyclopaedia Britannica describes Virtual Reality as “the use of computer modeling and simulation that enables a person to interact with an artificial three-dimensional (3-D) visual or other sensory environment”.
