Definition

Proximity cards are contactless cards standardized according to ISO/IEC 14443 [3].

Background

The communication between a PCD (Proximity Coupling Device; aka a reader) and a PICC (= Proximity Integrated Circuit Card) is performed using an electromagnetic field coupling between the reader and the card. The coupling is used for both powering the PICC by the PCD and for the data exchange between the PICC and the PCD.

Proximity cards can only be read in close proximity to the reader (typically up to 7.5 cm). They operate with a 13.56 MHz RF field.

The NFC harmonization (NFC entry) encompasses the Proximity cards compatibility.

Applications

Typical applications of Proximity cards are ticketing, identification, authentication, payment, access control, etc. For example, proximity cards are used for the contactless automated fare collection in public transportation (e.g., the Oyster card in the London Underground).
