Abstract

Can prevention models now common to medicine be extended to psychotic disorders? Advances in early detection and intervention in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer have led to substantial reductions in morbidity and mortality and improved quality of life among individuals with these conditions (Adams et al. 2007; Berenson 2005; Parekh et al. 2006; Peters et al. 1996). The success of these programs is based on four primary factors: (1) they target disorders with relatively high prevalence; (2) risk is known to be greatest among particular demographic groups, facilitating efficiency of screening; (3) accurate and objective assessment methods exist for early detection; and (4) an array of interventions are available that scale in invasiveness with stage of illness.
