Abstract

The interaction between sleep and immune system has been under study for some years. Although such studies have began many years ago, only in the last decade the investigation had taken place systematically. Two major phenomena have guided the research on this interaction. The first one corresponds to the lethargy and strong sleepiness that occur during infections and inflammatory conditions. The second one is related to data showing that one of the consequences of sleep deprivation includes increased susceptibility to infection. Thus, the effects of sleep deprivation have been examined to improve our comprehension of the physiological function of specific endogenous immune-regulators during sleep as well as the importance of sleep for the immune system.
