Abstract

A continuum of simulation-based training systems currently exists and can be distinguished not only by their level of fidelity or graphical realism, but also by their level of intelligence. Intelligence in this case, is considered to be the ability of a system to diagnose and provide adaptive instruction and remediation. In this paper we discuss an intelligent air traffic control simulator and trainer called the Advanced Virtual Adaptive Tutor for Air Traffic Control Readiness (AVATAR). Unlike most of today’s simulations, AVATAR is based upon theoretically grounded instructional strategies and uses intelligent technologies that enable the system to diagnose, instruct, and remediate students based upon their performance while providing dynamically interactive simulation. A discussion of instructional deficiencies within current training simulations is presented as well as information about the instructional strategies and intelligent technologies used within AVATAR to overcome those shortcomings.
