Named in honor of William K. Hartmann, senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson. Hartmann’s contributions to solar system research have ranged from work on planetary cratering rates and the origin of the Moon to studies of comets and Trojan minor planets. He is the author of several textbooks on astronomy and planetary science, as well as popular books on space exploration. Hartmann is also a renowned space artist whose paintings depict scenes predicted by modern research. (M 12458)
