Abstract
The Canaanite city-states had become wealthy as go-between trading with Egypt by sea and with Mesopotamia by land. These Canaanite city-states knew, from the days of Sargon the Great, that the Mesopotamian empire could defeat them in war. Therefore, they were careful to maintain good, and servile, political relations with Mesopotamia. The Canaanite city-states also knew that Egypt had a well-organized and numerous army, and therefore, maintained a respectful trade relationship with the Great Pharaohs.
